This dark green painted bentwood box features finely rendered flying gold-painted cranes or herons amid curling lines evocative of clouds or water. Executed in a Japanese-influenced art nouveau style, I would guess this box dates to the late 19th century. The underside of the lid and interior bottom of the box is lined with dark green fabric with a little padding underneath. Really lovely, it would be great for holding jewelry, sewing supplies (I found it filled with old buttons), or love letters!
The box is in excellent structural condition, with a bit of light cracking and loss of paint in a few areas, particularly round the edge of the lid. It measures 7 5/8” in diameter and 3 5/8” tall with lid on.
