This was a week for boxes, and this I think is my favorite of all of them--large, with very satisfying proportions, super fat dovetailed corners, brass hardware, and an early American Express paper shipping label still adhered to the top. I believe this would have been used as a hat box, perhaps military. American Express was founded in 1850 as a freight shipping and express mail dispatcher, with this label dating to the 1890s or so I believe. Just looking at it makes me want to plan a train trip in order to carry it along. Great now for storing the tallest of hats, or all sorts of other things, and super smart looking.
11 5/8" w x 11 5/8” d x 12 5/8 t and in very good condition, with disabled lock and brass hooks at front that close tight and hold it closed. Some wear to the stain along the front edge of the lid and an old split in the bottom, but still very sturdy and sound and capable of carrying significant weight.
