Antique German Bentwood Box with Floating Oil Lamp Wicks (Good for Making Wishes)

Regular price $30.00

I though this an especially nice one for the dawn of a new year, an antique box full of wishes of sorts, yet to be wished. There is a (partial) German paper label still adhered to the underside of the lid placing its making (or at least distribution) to Nuremberg, and then the word Mariposas, which in Spanish literally translates to "butterflies," an evocative descriptor for these tiny wicks held in wooden rounds, meant to be floated on lamp oil, and traditionally used for vigils I believe (I have also heard these called "good night lights.") A full set of them here, I'd guess 40 or so, housed in their lovely original bentwood box. Late 19th century or so I believe.

Box 3 1/8" x 2" x 1 1/2". All in very good condition.
