What a thing! The level of detail in this vintage Peruvian retablo just blows me away--with layers upon layers of simultaneous drama painstakingly packed into an 8" x 10" inch space. (Detail photos tell the story best.) It thus comes as no great surprise that it is signed on the back Claudio Jimenez, I believe attributing it to internationally renowned maker of retablos Claudio Jimenez Quispe, from a famous family of retablo makers in Ayacucho, Peru, now based in Lima and exhibiting around the world. With saints and angels on cloud at top, winged demons and serpents at bottom, and figures being pulled in both directions, I assume this is nothing less than a portrayal of heaven and hell.
10 1/2" t x 7 13/16" w x 3" d with doors closed. Very good vintage condition, likely late 20th century, and signed on the backside.
