I've always got an eye out for old tramp art boxes, but have gotten pretty fussy about what I like, wanting ones that feel singular and special--and this for me is very much those! Lifting the hinged lid reveals that it was the creation of A.L, who signed it very proudly in gold on green cloth lining-- and justifiably so; it's a wonderfully, laboriously, skillfully crafted thing that A.L or someone took great care of, as it remains in excellent condition. I especially love the very narrow neck between box and base and the unusual diamond-shaped details on each side which combines stacked layers with chip-carved strips turned on their sides. Looking closely at the wood one finds a little shimmer of gold paint here or there--super subtle, but adding a little extra bit of brilliance. Great warm patina otherwise and just a great one.
11 1/8" t x 7 1/4" w x 5 1/2" d. Excellent condition, earlyish 20th century I believe. Not a missing bit that I can see. Hinges are holding and lid closes flush. The cloth lining shows wear and age and a little fraying around the top but is still firmly held in place. The narrowness of the neck makes one want to be a bit careful carrying it around but is very sound and seems quite sturdy. There is just a little loss to the surface of a couple of strips on the back side, as documented, super minor.
