4:48, Unusual, Excellent, Rather Mysterious Old Painted Velvet Clock Pin Cushion

Regular price $130.00

This struck me as so unusual when I found it, and indeed I can't find any other example of old pin cushion with a stencil painted clock face like this out there anywhere. And what to make of the very specific position of the hands, marking  4:48 precisely? One sometimes sees 19th century pin cushions made to celebrate a birth (particularly with messages spelled out in stick pins); perhaps the time here marks the moment of a child's arrival in the world? (In which case one imagines the pin cushion used to hold diaper pins!) Or perhaps the 4:48 points to a biblical reference--what I turn up is John 4:48, which relates to the question of faith vs. proof ( Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.”) Or maybe it marked the time when our seamstress could put her sewing away and prepare to close up shop for the day! (I like this notion best, a pin cushion clock as note to self to go home!) Whatever the case, quite excellent I think.

3 1/4" d x 2 1/2" t. Good condition, general light wear from use, with most pin wear near the center of the clock. A few later stiches reinforcing the seam up the side, and one small stain just under the 9 of the clock, I have not tried to clean away. Sturdy and sound now, all seams tight, no holes (beyond tiny pin holes) and no leaks.
