Finding this and a second racing/homing pigeon photograph together at an estate in Gloucester, MA this weekend made me super happy--the very existence of homing pigeons makes me happy, really, with a fascinating history of service as carrier pigeons, and I think these vintage photographs are very beautiful. I have found a few similar photos in Naval archives, but think likely it came from the collection of a breeder. A note written directly on the photo indicates that this one is a Blue Check Cock (I'd guess born in 1941) and winner of the 500 mile Watch City Club race in 1946. What a handsome pigeon!
Framed, as found, in an inexpensive frame from which the photo is easily removed. Framed: 12" x 9 7/16". Photo: 10" x 8". Very good vintage condition with just a little wear. creasing along bottom edge of photo. A bit of glare caught in photos.
