Rare 1840 First Edition, Self Instructor in Phrenology and Physiology

Regular price $80.00

I have found just a couple of other first editions (1840) of this Self Instructor in Phrenology and Physiology by O.E. and L.N Fowler out there, featuring 100 engravings, selling for several hundred dollars each--many later editions were to follow, and I believe it remains in print today. While deeply problematic on so very many levels, in substance and even more so in implication and application, phrenology did certainly yield some pretty amazing diagrams and graphics, and, as with many artifacts of quack science, makes for fascinating (if also discouraging; according to this analysis I am most definitely doomed!) reading. Included in this volume is a (completed) evaluation at front, as well as evaluations of everyone from Daniel Webster to George Washington. I particularly enjoyed the evaluations of laugh, walk, hand shake, and intonation as character indicators.

7 1/2" x 5", 134 pages, with three pages advertising other Fowler and Wells publications at back, including lots of publications about Water Cures as well as on everything from the effects of tea and coffee to the vegetable diet. Very good condition, with minor scattered toning.
