Unusual Antique Sunday School Temperance Pledge: Wine, Beer, Cider, Tobacco--and Opium!

Regular price $20.00

This just struck me as a fun little bit of history--a Sunday School temperance pledge, c. 1880s I believe, which not only includes abstention from alcohol (wine, beer and cider) but also from tobacco and, most uncommonly, opium! These were a important component of the temperance movement in the 19th and early 20th century, and were often signed in public settings and organizational contexts, Sunday schools among them, to heighten accountability. I found it along with a 1882 printed card from T.S. McAnlis, New Castle PA, providing pricing for teachers to purchase thr Webster's Dictionary, The People's Encyclopedia, etc.--so I will send that along too.

Temperance card 3 1/2" x 2 3/8". Good condition, with a little toning and one light crease bottom right corner. Teachers card in very good condition.
