This is a very old thing, purchased from a dealer in Pennsylvania, found there, c. late 18th century German I believe. (There is a later note "Innsbruck" written on the reverse, I presume identifying where it came from, or where the family that owned it came from.) Clearly a split right down the middle was glued at some point, which struck me as rather poignant--a broken then mended heart. (Resilience here on all levels!) It also looks a bit as if the heart were a sun, rising along the horizon. Beyond that, I just fell in love with the gorgeous old painted surface. Looks like two blooming flowers on stems coming down from the top corners, and then an arch of painterly orange-red framing the heart from below.
11 1/* x 8 3/4". Much aged and split repaired as obvious--this is all about the beautiful old painted surface. Sound and stable now, with a hook on the back for hanging.
