Having spent a few years full time vegetable farming, including lots of harvesting of lettuces, this old press photo showing three men hard at work "truck gardening under glass" in New Jersey spoke to me--and beyond that I just think it's a beautiful image, the mens heads bowed in concentration, harvested soil behind them, densely planted field of soft lettuces in front of them, crates being filled, and with the architecture of the greenhouse lending a wonderful play of the geometries to it all. Truck gardening, or truck farming, is the growing of crops to be harvested and transported to market elsewhere--which really developed in the U.S. in the late 19th century aided by the development of the railroads and refrigeration. This is an original Underwood & Underwood press photo, stamped on the reverse; Underwood & Underwood--founded in 1881 in Ottawa, Kansas, by two brothers, Underwood & Underwood was at one time the largest publisher of stereoviews in the world, then in 1910 entered the field of news photography. I believe this is a fairly early example, c. 1910s-20s.
