I saw the face on this old carved figure first and it looked Inuit to me (and his hood, too!) but then his belted waist and the cross hanging from it, clearly describing him as a monk, and likely a saint, surely Latin American in origin. I love the combination of strong, square face and muscular chest together with those tiny hands and feet and very daintily carved belt and cross; he feels like quite a force, but a gentle one and I think very beautiful, with a terrific presence.
10 3/4" t x 4 7/16" w x 1 9/16" d. Stained wood on the cloak (showing here a bit redder than in hand) with dry surface (and nice warm patina) to face, hands, feet, belt and cross. Stands on his own. Small loss to toe of one foot and to one hand as shown.
