I do believe the best things are often the simplest, even better when born as the solution to a problem, and I really can't imagine a simpler or more satisfying approach to fraction learning than these old handmade blocks. Just right.
The blocks are large and chunky and perfect for young hands to stack and build with and throw around--though I might be tempted to keep them for myself, stacking them up like this to just leave and admire. The "Whole" and the 1/16's were made using stencils, while it appears that the others were hand-drawn, and then all the blocks were given a layer of varnish, which has protected them very well.
"Whole" measures 11" x 2 3/4" x 1 3/8". 1/16's measure 1 1/4" cubed. There is a little bit of old paper stuck to one edge of the "Whole", which could be scraped off. Overall great condition, with little dings here and there, all to the good. Definitely they have some age, I might think mid-20th century but am not certain.
