Vishnu as Varaha Trampling Demon Hiranyaksha, Antique Indian Manuscript Painting

Regular price $85.00

I think really nothing beats the color of opaque watercolors used for manuscript paintings like this, just out of this world, and with gold and silver leaf incorporated here too. The subject here is the Hindu deity Vishnu, protector and preserver of the universe, here incarnate as Varaha, with a boar's head and four armed human body (conch shell in one hand, Sudarshana chakra in another, trampling the demon Hiranyaksha as he rescues the Earth. Seems maybe just the right one for the moment, if only our Varaha would arrive! I am not expert enough to date manuscript painting such as this definitively, but there is a similar if somewhat more finely detailed example in the collection of the V&A, London, described as mid 19th c; I'd guess this just a bit later.

7 3/4" x 5 1/2". Gouache and gold and silver lead on papered board, writing on the reverse.
