"This is to Remember Me When I am Ded", Peter's 19th C. Ink and Watercolor Double Portrait

Regular price $50.00

This is to remember me / The grass is green /  The rose is red / This is left / When I am ded. Signed what looks like Peter S. Burgard; I have turned up a Peter Gurgard born in 1822 in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, married in 1850 in Erie, NY, which seems about right to me, period-wise and in terms of the costumes here but I don't know for certain. There were a few scraps of notes included with it (see photos) noting it was purchased along with a 1829 fraktur at an old estate auction, which makes sense too.  I love it especially for the gestures of these two and dynamic between them, her looking rather aghast and him rather sheepish, perhaps plotting his retreat away from her!  Great faces, great hands, great outfits, and great bloomers and stockings and boots, too!

3 7/8" x 5 3/4". Ink and watercolor on lined paper, very good condition, ink and color very strong.
