Such a beauty--and feels very timely, sadly in a very bittersweet sort of way. This is a watercolor, French I would think, signed AHD along the very bottom edge and dated 1817. I would presume done after a late 18th century engraving, though I have not found a definitive source, and emblematic of the allegorical personification of virtues of the period, which also gave rise to many Lady Liberties. Beautifully executed, wonderful bold red to her cape and rich gray ground, and I really love the delicacy of the scales she holds, as if the precarity of balanced justice were very well understood. Just lovely.
17" x 13" professionally framed, under glass, acid free mat and backing (as noted on reverse of frame.) Sight: 10 13/4" x 9 3/8". Watercolor on paper or card, looks like one clean tear at left and some scattered spotting. (Shot here with 2-4 x magnification.) Signed and dated 1817 just below her feet. Shows beautifully, with mat and framing bright and crisp.
