Pens and Pencils, Antique French Lacquer Divided Interior Snap Lid Box with Gold Lettering

Regular price $65.00

You likely know by now I've got a great love of pencil boxes--to me embodying the idea of arriving prepared (pencils sharp!), and ready to get to work. (I'm a rare one who usually looked forward to the first day of school!) This lovely black lacquered papier mache "pens and pencils" box, with continuous hinge along the back and gold lettering, is I believe French; I had a very similar one several years ago reading "Plumes et Crayons." Mid to third quarter 19th century, I believe, with divided interior to, at least originally, accommodate pencils, pens, and nibs. Lid snaps tightly shut in a very satisfying way for safe travel.

7 7/8" x 2 3/16" x 1 1/8". General wear to the gilded lettering but overall very good condition, sturdy and sound and smart looking. One tiny surface crack to the lacquer at one rear corner near the hinge, no real matter and not detracting.
