This completely thrilled me when I found it, at an antique shop that was my first stop on Pennsylvania last week. I was sold on the cover alone, but then a series of engravings inside very closely related, each as good as the next, and making me think of antique retablo paintings as much as anything, very gothic! Photos give a good sense, though the yellow of the cover is all the richer and more dramatic feeling in hand. The book is the Christian devotional Herz Des Menschen (The Heart of Man) by Johannes Gossner, this copy, in German, fraktur lettering, printed by Theo F. Scheffer in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 1856. 72 pages, 10 plates.
