I'm Still Single How are You? Mounted Photo of Very Handsome Couple on Embossed "Private Postcard", Early 20th C.

Regular price $45.00

What a strikingly handsome couple these two, and what an interesting postcard--their portrait a real photo, pasted down, but the mount a pre-printed postcard (first decade 1900s I believe; undivided back, 2 cent stamp) with the embossed text reading "I am still single. How are you?" I've found a few other examples of postcard mounts in just the same style as this one with other (mostly silly sorts of) embossed messages; but here, and a good part of why I'm obsessed with this one, is the way in which the photo seems to pointedly subvert the off the shelf text, and in so doing to point to the constrictions of forced closeting as gay men, and absurdity of language surrounding it, i.e. these two as perennial or "confirmed" bachelors, forever "single." Sharp, complete, concise, loaded, I think this is a very excellent thing, and addressed to two women, Misses Bessie and Bulah in Rebecca, GA.

5 15/16" x 3 3/4" and in very good condition.
