Guinea, Crow, Tame Pigeon, Turtle Dove - 1883 Iowa Egg Collection with Hand-inked Names

Regular price $135.00

There is no universe in which I would not bring these home with me, though I would love it if there were twice or ten times as many eggs inside this old tin. I found these in New Hampshire, but the Prairie Chicken egg, in addition to identifying it as such, notes the location: Grove Hill, Shelby County, Iowa, and the year of its collection, 1883.  Nine eggs here, seven of them with hand-inked names, in order: Guinea, Pigeon, Crow (my favorite), Prairie Chicken, Tame Pigeon (also my favorite!), Turtle Dove and Robin. With two unmarked--the largest I presume that of a farm hen. Sold exactly as found in this old tin with lid, set atop old cotton batting.

Tin measures 14" l x 2 5/8" w x 2 1/2" t. Photos give a good sense, blow holes at either end of the eggs show a little extra chipping around them here and there, and the turtle dove egg shows some surface cracking (seems it was never blown, but there is no odor to it!) Bend to bottom edge of tin at left end. I will pack these extra carefully for safe travel.
