Just a stunner of hand-carved hardwood box--whimsies are one thing, but how could someone have so perfectly carved this lid??? And how satisfying to have such an excellent raised pull to that lid, making sliding it open feel like an event and a joy. The box itself carved of one piece of wood, with three perfectly shaped compartments. I have found, with some searching, a very similar one (I would guess carved by the same maker) described as British c. 1870, which seems right--that with two compartments and described as a stamp box; I am not certain with one this one; perhaps for gaming pieces (i.e. pegs?) Almost feels like one could strike a match across the face of it, but I don't think that was the intent! Beautiful.
4 13/16" x 2 1/4" x 1 1/8" t. Very good condition, excellent all the way around.
