I would guess this hand-carved wooden capital "I" in original paint was once joined by an OOF, to stand for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; I do not know that for certain but have a pretty good hunch. But, really, what more does one need than an "I"??! Independent, individual, iconic! And of course a bold, gilded "I", with some American red and blue to boot, seems to pretty much perfectly describe this era; me me me!
8" t x 3 1/2" w x 1 7/8" d. Very good condition, no losses, just perfect wear and craquelure/crustiness to the very excellent paint. C. late 19th century.
