Sometimes I forget not to buy anything large and heavy, but I saw this, my heart jumped, and so here it is, purchased from a great dealer in Lancaster County, PA, from whom I've purchased a handful of really wonderful things over the past few years. It is an old one, 19th century for sure, with the sort of beautiful softening to the edges of the chip carved layers, and weathering to the painted surface (milk paint I believe) that only happens over years and years. Look at the back, too--with old metal chain still attached for hanging. There are some losses--of some long narrow bits around the far perimeter, and a few around the interior edge meeting the mirror, and here and there to the top pieces in a few of the very sculptural stacks--as I've done my best to document. Some blacking to the wood in spots too as shown. These feel pretty much all of a piece with it, fading away and part of its character rather than jumping out it view of it as a whole. The mirror I know from the dealer was a recent addition, professionally done, with the original back nailed back on.
19 1/2" x 17" x 1 5/8". Some losses described above and detailed in photos. Overall stable and sound, new mirror, original back and chain for hanging. One does wants to take some care handling it just by the nature of it.
