It has been a while since I found a match stick tramp art/prison art creation I really liked, but then this handsome dresser box, found in Maine, which someone took great care making and feels like quite a proud thing. Feels almost classical in its aspirations, between those precise inlays and that pedestal base, with four feet attached to underside too, and then a clean, crisp navy blue fabric lining. (The lining seems original to me but I can't say for certain; the careful framing of the fabric panel on the underside of the lid suggests there might have been at least the dream of inlaying a mirror there.) At the end of the day, quite a sharp looking box, which remains in very good, crisp and bright condition, and lots of room to stash things inside.
9 5/8" x 6 5/8" x 4 3/4" t. Very good condition, no losses that I can see, sturdy and sound and square on its feet. It seems as if the interior was pretty much never opened, with the finish to the varnish over the matchsticks there super bright, while it is more mellow on the exterior. C. 1940s-mid 20th century I believe.
