I know little to nothing about aviation history, but was really struck by these, which, with their evocative handwritten annotations (hard to tell but it looks to me as if scratched onto the negative before printing) for me capture quite a feeling of adventure and excitement about the early days of flight. And the names here are notable ones: (Archibald) Hoxsey (American, worked for the Wright Brothers, first pilot to fly at night); (Ralph) Johnstone (American, together with Hoxsey called the "heavenly twins" for their attempts to break altitude records, and the first American to die while piloting, in 1910); and Hubert Latham (French, first to attempt to cross the English Channel and to land on water), and for whom we are here directed to "LOOK IN THE TREE." Quite a piece of history, these, and just objectively quite wonderful I think.
From 2 1/4" x 3" to 2 5/16" x 3 3/16". Sold as set of four. First decade 20th century, matte paper prints. Good condition, with some toning/browning to the left area of sky on the Hoxsey photo, which feels all of a piece with them.
