Very Finely Crocheted, Hard-Shell Old Folk Art Humpty Dumpty...Rattle!

Regular price $75.00

I could not look at this little face and walk away. I And while I know it can be hard to gauge from photos, what makes this great is how finely done it is--those crocheted stitches are very tiny, and very tight. Also, Humpty Dumpty, with origins dating back at least to the late 18th century, is an interesting character: a personification of precariousness, making him feel like something of a metaphor for the moment.

If you look closely you can see there's a bit of raised work along the bridge of the nose to give some dimension to the face, and then two tiny red dots of thread at the nostrils, just above the red lips. Plus a baby blue bow at the chin, and a little tassel hanging from its little blue gap. All executed over a hard shelled egg form--stronger than a real egg shell and with a little more weight to it, but hollow inside, as this egg is a rattle!

2 3/4" t x 1 1/2" d. Crochet over some type of hard shell with rattle inside, sounds like make a small wooden ball or maybe a bean rattling around in there, masking good sound. The small wooden cup/lid used here as a stand of sorts I found with it and will send along, but a true egg cup would be ideal! Very good condition ,1920s-40s I believe, general light staining/toning but not a lost stitch that I can see and not at all fragile.
