Book As Object, Mid 1800s PA German Catechism with Best Hand Blocked Paper Covers

Regular price $35.00

When in Pennsylvania, I keep a keen eye out for 19th century PA German catechisms with beautifully papered covers. Hand-marbled paper covers are one thing, but this is like an early wallpaper box except in book form. Gorgeous, and a great thing to collect, I'd say.  And here, remnants of a pink paper, letterpress printed book seller's label on the inside of the cover. The book itself is Der Kleine Catechismus. (The Small Catechism) of Martin Luther ("along with the usual morning, evening and table prayers," etc...), this copy printed in Philadelphia by Georg W. Mentz. No date. but c. 1840s. With an engraving of Martin Luther opposite the title page.

5 3/4" x 3 3/4", 144 pp. Good condition, covers, spine and binding in good shape.  General toning/spotting inside, an some scattered stains (One page pictured with much more pronounced staining than elsewhere.)
