1895 Hand-sewn Tumbling Blocks Quilt with Best Paper Templates Reverse

Regular price $0.00

Since discovering the existence of paper template quilt piecing, sometimes called mosaic patchwork, I have been totally obsessed with it; there is really no world in which I would not show this tumbling blocks quilt top with the paper side facing--visually stunning, super graphic and brilliantly colorful, the method and process of construction exposed, and so much information right there to, literally, read. (If the quilt had been completed, the paper side would have been covered; here we see the blocks were basted together, all work by hand, but the final seams never completed.)

Without too much hunting I found the year 1895 on one of the cut paper squares (with the printed word "Wonderful" just below it); certainly it dates to that year or very close. I know from the dealer I purchased this from that it was pulled out of an estate in Connecticut, the contents of which had been virtually unchanged since this late 1800s--standing like a time capsule to another age. (I was very envious!)

60" x 47 1/2". Good condition, clean, no odors. Some wear to the paper, corresponding to how it was folded, in quarters. Not very fragile, front side very bright/unfaded, both sides showing beautifully. I would hang this straight on the wall.
