A very homemade old tool, and beautifully so. An old tag from the now deceased dealer I purchased this from described it as an antique mast scorer from Maine. And indeed, the iron spikes extending at regular intervals from the rotating wooden wheels at either end are quite sharp enough to leave their mark. From what I understand, this would have been using for marking the mast/s of a sailboat to indicate specific sail positions or settings for optimal performance. A bit like a homemade double travelers wheel but a mark-making tool, too.
10 1/4" x 2 3/4" x 1 3/16". Loss to one edge of the wheel on one end and a couple of spikes lost, all as documented. Wonderfully primitive looking tool with a terrific patina.
