I take this as a wolf with those exposed teeth, though I suppose it could be an especially ferocious dog! Whatever the case, quite a beautiful pipe bowl I'd say, which looks to have been carved from burl wood to me which gives the wonderful effect of a curly mane. Most definitely it was used, with blackening around and inside the opening of the bowl and a rich patina everyone else. 19th c. I believe and very lovely.
2 3/4” l x 2” t X 1 3/4” w, and nice now just set somewhere. The base is flush so it can be set fangs up! Very good antique condition, with what I believe is just a bit of wax around the eye on one side, which looks fairly easily removed should one desire.
