Woman Fishing, Clever and Pretty 19th C. Patch or Powder Box I/O

Regular price $55.00

A lovely little box and a clever one too, with the image of a young woman fishing surely a metaphor for the box's contents--makeup to assist in the art of seduction (or, more crassly, in fishing for a mate!)  Made of celluloid with embossed brass around the sides and the image a hand-colored engraving printed on cloth. I am not completely certain if a patch box, for beauty marks to be adhered to the face, or for rouge/powder, but I believe one or the other. WIth original pink board liner around the bottom interior.

2 1/4" diameter x 7/8" t. Very good condition, c. 1850s-60s and I believe most likely French.
