Weird and Wonderful Danish Folk Art Carving, "Moderskarlek" (Motherhood)

Regular price $65.00

It seems perhaps this folk art sculpture might once have had a few additional parts or wires--as is, turning the crank that runs through the hind of the mother bear causes a little movement among the cubs climbing atop her, but not much. But how not to love them, and this crazy cat with open arms at the front of the piece, which seems to want to hug the mother bear but can't quite reach? There is clipped newspaper text glued ( and shellacked over) to the piece on one side, in Danish, which clearly inspired it and translates as: "Motherhood. Wild Norrland bears let their young play on their broad backs." If the maker of this piece was not themselves a mother, surely  they were an empathetic father!

Overall 6 1/8" t x 5 7/8" w x 7 3/8" d. As noted, there may be some pieces missing, but as is all of the carved animals are in good condition, sturdily screwed on to the mother and/or to the base, and the whole think is sturdy and stable. Everything is covered with a layer of varnish or shellac.
