Sometimes I feel like things were made just for me to find them. Like this one. As you probably know by now, I love found language, and especially words and phrases that have the capacity to take on different meanings in different contexts. I'm not sure what this "SOLE" sign was originally made to signal--whether it was someone's last name, or made by a fish monger (my guess) or to hang in a cobbler's shop, or what. But for me, who loves people but prefers to be alone about 90% of the time, it's an announcement of independence and singularity and an embrace of solitude! And considered this way, I think the execution could not be better: no fuss but in its matter of fact way a bit poetic too, making me think that if e.e. Cummings were to make a sign it would look like this! And then of course there is the soul, too. I
12" long x 5 1/2" tall x 3/4" thick. I think the lettering was probably airbrushed, then varnished over. There was a little stickiness to the face so I wiped it clean and it is in great shape. The back should wipe pretty clean too if desired.
