I bought this antique Staffordshire spill vase just after I had purchased a pair of vintage Mexican folk art candleholders; I was struck at the moment by the similarities among them in their charming, somewhat kitschy Baroqueness. And as a spill vase was used to carry a flame from fireplace to candle or stove, they relate in function as well. I really love the smiling faces on these two and the way she seems to lean a bit against him, and also that little lamb, I'd guess, which looks like it wants to jump up into her lap!
Late 19th century I believe, this piece has been repaired: there is a crack that runs across her face and across his front, just turning the corner. There are plenty of similar Staffordshire spill vases out there in excellent condition should one be looking for one, but I bought and am I'm listing this one because I really like it just as it is! 5 1/4" tall x 4" wide x 1 3/4" deep.
