Very Naive Old Mexican Folk Art Ex Voto Retablo Painting with Wonderful Figures and Geometries

Regular price $195.00

Total love for this one--a super naive antique Mexican folk art ex voto retablo on tin, c. early 20th century, with no text ever added to the white painted strip along the bottom, such that St. Anthony, shown here holding an infant Jesus, was never given his full thanks! What a wonderfully soulful face on him, and a mini-adult one on the baby too, and then this fabulous rose cheeked kneeling woman in black with white polka dots, holding up what looks less like a candle than a flourescent light bulb turned on the vertical! Best of all is the handling of the space they inhabit: sky blue walls for Anthony and baby Jesus to float against, a curiously placed window hovering in limbo, and the woman appearing perched on the white strip as if it were a ledge, saving her from fall ing into a deep brick-lined pit. Love.

12 1/16" x 8 9/16. Rusting and aging as evident, all to the good I think, no significant bends or dings.
