By far my favorite "hidden mother" tintype I've had--for the strange looking baby (looks almost like an adult head collaged onto a baby's body!), and for the not one but two "hidden" figures. Happily the face of the young mother directly behind the baby is revealed in profile just to the left of the baby's head (look closely), lending a sense of playfulness to an otherwise somewhat eerie feeling image. And then another figure lingering in the shadows at far right, with one hand visible and the buttons down the front of dress or smock. With what looks like a painted mountainous backdrop behind them all, just right for completing the scene--very painterly and otherworldly feeling, but with the seams very much showing!
3 7/16" x 2 1/2" and in good antique condition, some surface aging along the left and bottom edge and general surface wear. With "Uncle Howard" written in graphite on reverse!
