Such a charming wood carved and polychrome painted Madonna, earlyish 20th c. Mexican I believe, who also looks to me very much like a nun, and very much ready to fend off anyone who might want to mess with baby Jesus, who wonderfully floats to the side of her very large hand, as if levitating on his own! I just love the earnest primitiveness of this, down to the very crudely painted faces. At the same time, there is a wonderful scalloping to the front hem of her robe, and carved articulation of her fingers, which to me express a real sense of care and devotion on the part of the maker.
8 1/16" t x 3 3/8" w x 2 5/8" d (measured on the square) and in very good condition with nice aging to the paint.
