Sunderland c. 1860s Odd Fellows Transferware Bowl

Regular price $80.00

I love antique Sunderland transferware pieces with verses on them, and while the transfer on this one wasn't very carefully done, I rather love it for that reason, including for the fact that the verse itself speaks to having empathy and forgiving faults! ("Teach me to feel another's woe / To hide the fault I see / That mercy I to others show / That mercy show to me.") On the opposite side, an image of an Independent Order of Odd Fellows all seeing eye, hand with heart, and shield with symbols, flanked by a whole cast of characters and the words "Manchester Unity" at the very bottom. There is a history of Sunderland's use of the particular copper plate that produced this transfer, known as the 'Garrison Pottery 4' plate, here.  At the center of the bowl, seemingly unrelated to either, is a boating scene.

5 5/8" in diameter, 2 7/8" tall and in very good condition (though with plenty of irregularities indigenous to it), with no chips, cracks or other issues.
