A stroke of great luck stumbling upon this one "in the wild" last weekend--a stunning, beautiful condition Native American basket from Northern California. The Hupa, Karuk and Yoruk people, of the Klamath and Trinity River regions, are renowned for their finely woven, utilitarian, and ceremonial baskets that showcase intricate geometric designs and exceptional craftsmanship. Constructed of materials native to the region, this hand-woven, twined "bowl" features diagonal geometric designs running all the way around, composed of dark brown and black (Maidenhair fern I believe) triangles. Produced primarily in the late 19th to early 20th centuries, these highly prized baskets were traditionally used for storage, cooking, gathering, and as trade items. I believe this basket likely dates to the first quarter of the 20th century or so.
6" diameter x 3 1/4" tall. Excellent condition, as documented.
