I was pretty blown away when I find this antique RPPC yesterday in New Hampshire—what a stunning image. Clearly these are coal miners having emerged from the deep in the mine,
with this soot covered hound at the center of it all. I'm guessing this was taken about c. 1910s, when hard-shelled electric miner's cap lamps began to replace canvas caps with brackets to which oil lamps attached, which is what a few of these miners are still wearing; this change f
ollowed the establishment of the U.S. Bureau of Mines (1910), which sought to improve safety for miners following a series of coal mine disasters. So, this seems a notable photograph relative to mining history and its technologies, but for me of course it is the incredible faces and postures and gestures of these men (and dog) that I love.
5 1/2" x 3 1/2" and in very good condition. Unused back. There is just a tiny bit of curl to the card, minor, and which I think will flatten out completely.
