One of my favorite finds at the Rhinebeck show, purchased from a Maine based dealer who always has wonderful things. And the warm energy around this box is of a magical sort. I believe it was made as a box to hold folding straight razors, and I have a hunch it was the box of someone who delivered shaves for a living--perhaps a train station barber, very common in the late 19th/early 20th century, with the box feeling to me close kin to a folk art shoe shine box in spirit. With this great composition of metal stars and moon and globe and question mark nailed to the front, more metal bits artfully composed on the back, a brass hinge on one side and an arrow pointing up to the latch on the opening side. .
7 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 2". Photos don't quite capture the presence of this, really a special feeling thing, with a terrific object-hood and very rich patina. Opens easily and latch holds lid closed.
