This face vessel is a piece of folk art sewer tile pottery, made by workers at the tile & pipe factories (especially in Ohio) during the late 19th to earlyish 20th centuries. To my eye it's an especially sensitive and soulful feeling example--a self portrait I'd like to imagine. I especially love the color variation on the drippy glazing, making it seem as if our man has tears streaming down his face, especially on his left side, amplifying the expressiveness of what already feels like a very singular sort of visage, and with mouth slightly open as if about to speak the story of his life. And it's just the right size to cup in one's hands should one wish to use it to imbibe! Wonderfully evocative.
