As I too often am sorry to say, photos do no justice at all to these blocks, which have an old light varnish finish over top, so are hard to shoot-- details give a somewhat better sense, and there is a whole lot of charm in the details here! Terrific imagery, terrific words, with the face of each handmade block a hand-colored print, I think likely paper cut from an early children's picture alphabet book then mounted to the hand-cut wooden blocks. (I can find no other set like this out there.) Not a complete alphabet here but nearly so--21 of what would have been 25 blocks (I and J are combined); missing are B, U, V and X.
Each block 3 1/8" x 2 3/4" x 5/8". General wear and aging, which I think add to their charms. C. mid 19th century I believe.
