This fantastic original 1969 poster for me perfectly encapsulates the sort of excitement one must have felt when the traveling circus was coming to town---and what a clown!
A little reveals that the "Sells and Gray" was indeed celebrating its 66th year in 1969, and was owned by the Acme Circus Operating Corporation, which also owned and operated the Clyde Beatty Cole Bros and The King Bros. Circus. It was a mid-size show, but especially known for its aesthetics, with bright and colorfully painted equipment and, clearly, great advertising! Sells and Gray reached its height of popularity in the 60s and early 70s, finally closed at the end of the 1978 season. So this poster comes from its heyday.
17 1/4" x 12 3/4", three color screen print I believe, on cardboard, in really excellent condition. Tiny pin holes at the corners but otherwise pretty much like new. On the reverse is written Matt Otto, May '69. Shipped flat.
