SOLD Scarce, Large, Proud c. 1840s Redware Chest of Drawers "Savings Bank", ex. Matt King

Regular price $325.00

I fell in love with this redware chest as a striking and substantial sculptural object (immediately reminding me of a wonderful gold speckle glazed ceramic salesman sample radiator I found some years ago) before really noticing that it was made as a coin bank, and also before turning it over to see it recently came out of the collection of Matt King. I like the fact that simply putting a slot in something gave some purpose to its existence, while also introducing an internal tension--in this case, to get coins out would be to break the bank, or at least to have to shake this heavy thing for quite a white to get the coins back out through the slot they came in through. The yellow glazed pulls really do it for me too. Substantial scale, terrific presence, c. 1840s American, really nicething.

7" t x 7" w x 4" d. Very good antique condition, very smart looking. A few surface losses at top corners and along edge of one side, as pictured, I think not in the least detracting. No cracks or repairs, very sturdy and sound and proud looking.
