It seems a loss that study of the history of decoration is no longer a standard component of school curriculum--as what a lot is to be gleaned from studying (literal) patterns! The Ray Hayden who kept this notebook appears to have been quite a good student, diligent in his note-taking (more pages of handwritten notes than documented here) and exacting in the execution of his pattern studies (all of which are pictured), rendered in ink, graphite and watercolor. Very lovely. A sewing notebook by Ray also listed separately today, that one dated 1903.
9 1/4" x 6 1/8". 21 pages, filled mostly on one side only (a few exceptions) + 10 blank pages and a few notes at end of notebook. Good condition.
