I purchased this small pot yesterday from one of my favorite dealers in NH (and really anywhere) and know it is Mississipian, the Native American civilization that flourished from approximately 800 CE to 1600 CE in areas of what is now the Midwest, East, and Southeast, known for using riverine shell as a tempering agent in making the clay paste for pottery. The Mississippian produced some incredibly effigy vessels in the form of human heads and animals, but this small coil made bowl would have been for everyday use. I find it very beautiful for its simple form and smooth surface, variegated in color (pinkish and brown tones) and with a sheen to it, which makes it a very satisfying thing to hold and keep near.
4 1/8” d x 2 3/4” t. and in very good condition, with no chips or cracks or other issues.
