Birch Bark Antique Lidded Box with Leather Pull

Regular price $80.00

This is a wonderful old birch bark box with a great form and patina, and wonderful scalloped edges around the bark of the exterior, which is wrapped around the box and nicely tucked in at the end. A leather pull on the top with scalloped edge matches. I believe this box would have been used to store tobacco, and I have seen very similar examples described as Native American, primarily dating to the mid- to late- 19th century.

There are a series of X's carved lightly into the exterior near the top on one side, making the surface all the more interesting. The interior shows the unfinished bark on the sides and an unfinished wooden bottom. The lid fits on snugly.

Very good condition, with some wear/aging to the exterior as there should be and a few tiny dings. Clean inside. 3 3/4" wide x 2 1/2" deep x 3 1/8" tall (4 1/8" tall including leather pull.)
