I find this old Atlas Tires sign, c. 1940s-early 50s, pretty beautiful in its much rusted and eroded state. Apparently this particular sign is quite a rare one, made to be used in pairs, with the "wings" folded and bolted together, leaving a gap between the two for a tire to rest upon for display. This one seems never to have been used that way but clearly was left out in the elements for many years, perhaps in wait of its mate! I love the winged form--making me think of hands raised in wait of a ride (or AAA!)--and its feeling as an ancient relic of another era.
