There are certainly a fair number of old amateur paintings of roses (and pansies, etc) out there and certainly this is no masterpiece of an example, but I love the big pale pink and cream roses against near-black ground, and especially the craquelure to the paint, making the painting feel all the moodier--a melancholy to mitigate any sense of the maudlin. Kind of an odd one too--I believe I have it properly oriented, these roses laid out across a ledge, but that ledge just floating against black, no more sense of context than that.
19" x 10", oil on canvas. Good condition, craquelure to the paint all to the good. One or two tiny holes in the canvas, as documented--only evident if holding it up to light.
